OUR HISTORY

The Detert’s set their roots down in Napa Valley in 1953 after operating a family ranch in Lake County since the late 1800‘s. Oakville’s tranquil, rural atmosphere appealed deeply to great-grandmother Detert, so she purchased a vineyard property there.

Her son, Gunther, passionate about wine and viticulture, took the reins on managing the vineyard while continuing to build a successful law practice in San Francisco.

Over the years, Gunther and his wife, Marie-Louise, worked to establish the vineyard as one of the most sought after sources of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc fruit in the valley.

As a component of the original To Kalon Vineyard wines, the Robert Mondavi Reserve Cabernet and Opus One wines, fruit from the Detert vineyard site has been a component of the valley’s most prestigious cuvees since the history of winegrowing in Napa Valley began.

In 2000, the three Detert great-grandsons, Tom Garrett, John Garrett and Bill Cover, made the “official” leap from growers to winemakers when they began showcasing the vineyard’s fruit under the Detert family label.
